Abstract
Wide-ratio range continuously variable transmissions (CTVs) for passenger cars are useful in reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The use of such transmissions in a hybrid driveline will effect other benefits and advantages. The paper presents concepts to increase the ratio range compared to transmissions which are currently produced. These methods are applicable to transverse and longitudinally mounted engines in front and rear drive cars. A new valuation procedure is described which helps to determine the optimum solution. The resultant CVTs require very little additional expenditure while further reducing petrol consumption and emissions.
