Abstract

Between 1992 and 1996, 90 patients with perianal eczema (55 male, 35 female) were patch tested with standard and specific allergens. 12 patients showed one and 36 at least two sensitizations. No sensitizations occurred in 42 patients (47%). The most frequent reactions were found for balsam of Peru (19%), fragrance (19%), paraben mixture (10%), phenylmercuric acetate (10%), Varigloban® (sodium iodide, benzyl alcohol) (17%), Tct. Catechu (10%), clioquinol (10%), neomycinsulfate (10%), benzocaine (10%), dibromodicyanobutane + 2-phenoxyethanol (Euxyl K 400®) (8%) and hexylresorcinol (8%). The perianal region offers ideal conditions for sensitization, which is also favored by polypragmatic and purely symptomatic attempts at treatment and excessive or wrong hygiene measures. Exact diagnosis is an absolute precondition for successful therapy.
