Abstract
Social insurance statistics from 1985 to 1990 point to an increasing prevalence of work-related diseases in room cleaning personnel (in most cases: hand eczema). In the participating hospitals of the "Information Network of Departments of Dermatology" (IVDK) in Germany, 439 room cleaners were patch tested between 1990 and 1994. Of these patients 110 suffered from work-related hand eczema. The most frequent allergens were rubber chemicals (mainly thiuram derivatives) and disinfectants (glutardialdehyde, formaldehyde and glyoxal). N-Isopropyl-N-phenyl-p-phenylendiamin and related compounds, Tego 103 S (disinfectant) and preservatives, fragrance and ointment bases were only of limited importance.
