Abstract

The light induced isomerization and dimerization of two 2-aryl-3-furylacrylonitriles 3a, b in iso-propyl acetate solution have been investigated. Both the "virtual" and the "real" decomposition of these substances have been determined by UV-spectroscopy and gas chromatography (GLC). The major reaction products (cyclobutanes 4a, b) have been isolated and their structures confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis.
