Abstract
Ultrasonography will increasingly become the method of choice for the intraoperative diagnostic work-up in open and laparoscopic surgery, making radiological examination superfluous. Sonography will gain increasing importance in the primary diagnostic work-up, in supporting therapeutic intervention and for examining the results of the treatment. Due to it's high potential for further improvements (e.g. navigated sonography) more expensive and demanding imaging procedures like CT and MR will be well replaced. A thorough training of surgeons in performing sonography should, therefore, remain a well accepted module.
