Abstract
Bacteriologic smears from both involved as well as uninvolved skin of patients with atopic eczema were positive for S. aureus in 78% compared with 10% in healthy controls. S. epidermis was found in 19% of the atopics compared with 80% of the controls. There was no difference in nasal smears between the two groups. To intradermal tests with S. aureus 38% of patients with atopic eczema and 17% of the controls showed positive reactions of the immediate type. These bacteriologic and skin test results might possibly indicate the involvement of infect-allergic mechanisms in atopic eczema.
