Abstract

Within a period of 10 years (1982-1992), 167 acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)-intolerant patients were observed in our clinic. 87 (52%) suffered from an underlying disease: 24 (27,6%) suffered from asthma bronchiale (group I) and 64 (73,6%) from chronic urticaria and/or Quincke's edema (group II). In group I, 17 (70,8%) of the asthmatic patients developed bronchoconstriction from ASA, 13 of them reported about additional symptoms. The other 7 asthmatic patients responded to ASA with extrabronchial symptoms. In group II, 57 (89%) of the patients showed skin reactions, 26 of them suffered also from other symptoms. The remaining patients did not develop any dermatologic manifestation, but presented other symptoms. Our results indicate, that intolerance reactions of patients with chronic urticaria and/or Quincke's edema correspond more frequently with the underlying disease, than those of the patients with asthma bronchiale.
