N2 - This paper shows the equivalence of an energy based model (EBM) of ferromagnetic hysteresis and the well-known Preisach model (PM) of hysteresis for the case of a scalar input variable. It is shown that the memories of both models have a similar representation and a simple mapping between the models is presented. It is revealed that the Preisach density functions originating from the EBM are defined only along discrete lines. This opens up a comfortable possibility to evaluate an integral over the Preisach density function. The model was applied to the diffusion equation which describes thin ferromagnetic steel sheets. Simulation results are presented. A similar interpretation of the vector valued EBM as a vector Preisach operator is possible, however it is not treated within this paper.
