Abstract
In patients with chronic eczema the effects of local urea treatment on the degree of skin hydration and barrier function of the skin were studied by measuring the capacitance and transepidermal water loss (TEWL). In a multicentric trial, 43 patients with chronic eczema were treated with 10% urea for four weeks. Prior to therapy the affected skin has shown a 1.8-fold increase in TEWL as compared to normal skin. After four weeks' treatment this value decreased to 1.3-fold. Normalisation of the barrier function correlated significantly with the clinical improvement of the eczema. The value of capacitance increased significantly from 56.2% prior to therapy to 68.46 units after 4 weeks of treatment.
