Abstract

The effect of local strain at a Ruthenium (Ru) surface on the adsorption of various adsorbates was studied using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The local variations of surface strain sensitively probed by adsorption of a species were demonstrated. The direct evidence for a compressed lattice zone close to step edges was also analyzed. It was shown that the adsorption energy of adsorbed gas particles was influenced by local strain fields leading to a uniform spatial distribution.
