Abstract

Weight-in-motion (WIM) systems generally offer increased highway efficiency. This paper explores the potential applications of available WIM sensor technologies with respect to their technological characteristics. A framework for their integration into the efficient management of road infrastructure is proposed, focusing on design, data requirements, decision support functionality and functional characteristics. The structure, characteristics and potential opportunities and benefits in appropriate road management information systems are outlined.
