Abstract

12C2 and 13C2 were efficiently produced by a dc discharge of H12CN, H13CN and 12C2H2 and their matrix absorption and emission spectra in the infrared and the near-infrared region have been studied. Laser excitation of the 2-0 and 3-0 A 1Πu← X1Σ+g Phillips bands leads to both A 1Πu → X1Σ+g emission, as well as to be 3Σ-g →a 3Π u fluorescence resulting from nonradiative intersystem crossing. Consecutive two-photon absorption results in a strong blue emission in the visible attributable to the d3Πg →a 3Πu Swan system. The spectroscopic constants for all the observed states in solid neon have been obtained and compared with the values in the gas phase. The relaxation mechanisms leading to population of the b 3Σ-g state are discussed.
