Abstract
The load carrying behaviour of structural systems consisting of beam members with thin-walled cross sections is strongly influenced by its material law, the imperfections, the loading and boundary conditions. The diverse factors interact nonlinearly, and in addition to coupled bending and torsion the effects of warping constraints may be of importance. In the paper this special influence is treated in detail using an incremental solution method. The element stiffnesses are obtained by direct numerical integration of the basic equations rather than by trial functions to include the effect of warping more accurately. In the numerical studies the influence of the warping constraints on bifurcation and ultimate loads is discussed and compared with results of St. Venant-torsion. (Edited author abstract. )
