Abstract

The compression of the gas diffusion layer is an important parameter in a fuel cell setup. Its influence on the oxygen mass transport is investigated by the measurement of the limiting current density with diluted oxygen. For low compressions of <15% based on its initial thickness, we found that the oxygen mass transport resistance is increasing significantly in the high current region where condensation takes place due to increased product water formation. We hypothesize that a liquid water film is blocking the oxygen transport pathway at the interface between microporous layer and electrode. Furthermore, we discovered an earlier onset of water condensation at high compressions caused by a reduction of the thermal contact resistance.
