Abstract

The effects of flame annealing on the surface structure of polycrystalline gold and platinum electrodes were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. For gold a pronounced facetting in the (100) direction was observed. The roughness of the platinum sample was significantly reduced by the annealing procedure. On an electrochemically roughened Pt(111) electrode atomic scale resolution was achieved on a surface with near-atomic scale roughness.
