Abstract
High concentrations of cholesterol, especially LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides are risk factors of coronary heart disease. Diet is the basic therapeutic measure in these metabolic diseases. In hypercholesterolemia, the consumption of long-chain saturated fatty acids and of cholesterol must be decreased and that of polyunsaturated fatty acids increased. In case of obesity, reduction of body weight is necessary. In hypertriglyceridemia, the most important measure is reduction of obesity. In addition, alcohol and sugar consumption must also be decreased. Adherence to diet must be controlled. The efficiency of diet in hyperlipidemias with respect to primary and secondary prevention is not yet conclusive, but there are sufficient arguments for a modification of diet to influence disorders of lipid metabolism which are risk factors for coronary heart disease.
