Abstract
The concept of sustainable development embraces conflicting opinions. In this paper, sustainable development is defined by five dimensions. It becomes obvious that with regard to the discussion on development in rural areas a number of concepts display similar principles. Sustainable development may be a promising concept for the development of rural areas, especially when the elements of participation and partnership merge into a bottom-up approach.
