Abstract

Two highly potent sunscreens with sun protection factors 25 and 15 were applied to 30 children with the average age of 10.3, hospitalized with chronic relapsing atopic dermatitis, successively for the duration of 4 weeks in the course of a complex high-mountain climate therapy in Davos/Switzerland. By that means relevant erythematous reactions against the intensive solar radiation could be avoided with very good skin compatibility. By the regular use of the creams, being buffered at acidic levels, highly significant increases of the alkaline neutralisation capacity of the skin could be achieved. Only two weeks after start of the study a marked improvement of the symptoms of atopic dermatitis was stated, and at the end of the study 28 out of 30 children were in complete remission. Thus the tested sunscreens can be completely recommended for use in the systematic sun protection of children with atopic dermatitis.
