Abstract
Modern digital data and GIS abilities allow producing highly detailed erosion prediction maps even on a country scale. Erosion was predicted for Bavaria (70 547 km2) resolved to 50 × 50m based on the Universal Soil Loss Equation. Comparison with older maps of lower resolution revealed that the erosion had previously been overrated mainly due to inaccuracies in the slope gradient and in the superposition of the different parameters. Validation of the results in a small model area, where input parameters were determined with much more detail and accuracy, showed high degree of correspondence of both predictions. Even on the country scale erosion prediction almost has reached a level, which previously was only achievable in small research areas.
