Abstract

A laboratory autoclave has been developed that can simultaneously evaluate 14 different reactions in solution at the same high pressure and temperature relationships. Up to now there have been few published results of a number of reactions carried out at the same time at high pressure. The carrying out of an entire batch of catalyst experiments under high temperature and pressure has not yet been described. This new technique opens the way to increased efficiency in screening high pressure reactions because many of the industrially relevant catalytic reactions are influenced by reaction pressure. Examples are carbonylation reactions, hydrogenation, ethenolysis, and olefin/alkyne polymerizations. Because of its simple and cost effective design, the modified autoclave can be used cost effectively for most working groups. Its further miniaturization is being studied. The large number of reaction parameters to be optimized has led, in catalyst development, to a widespread use of rapid screening methods. Pressure reactions have escaped this accelerated testing or screening on equipment grounds. There is the expense of time in the assembly of pressure vessels and the safety measures to be taken with respect to their use. The high cost of pressure autoclaves does not often permit having equipment available for parallel reactions to be carried out.
