Abstract

We present stationary and modulation characteristics of a short-cavity vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) with 17 GHz bandwidth and emitting at 1.55 μm. The results of several bit-error rate experiments performed with comparable VCSELs and different modulation formats are compared. Net bit rate up to 87.5 Gb/s have been demonstrated with a single VCSEL, as well as transmission distances up to 960 km.
