Abstract

In a 1 years period Tubularized incised plate urethroplasty (TIP) has been performed in 13 boys with hypospadias and in 1 boy with epispadia as part of the complete urethral repair. According to the technique described by Snodgrass, which was only modified using a single layer closure of the glans, a uniform standard was rapidly established and carried out by our group. Beginning with distal forms the application of the technique was extended to mid shaft hypospadias with penile curvature and to an epispadia. After 7-10 days of transurethral bladder drainage spontaneous micturation was always possible while glans and meatus appeared to have a physiologic aspect. Within a 4 to 16 months follow up a single meatal stenosis was successfully treated by cold knife incision and temporary bladder drainage. The TIP-technique is easy to grasp and impresses by its good results. We agree with W. Snodgrass that this technique could be the first choice option for the majority of mid and distal shaft hypospadias provided that simultaneous circumcision is accepted by the patients and their parents.
