Abstract

The anaesthesiologist is responsible for an adequate depth of anaesthesia. However, a light anaesthesia regimen may cause intraoperative awareness, whilst deep anaesthesia is suspected to increase postoperative mortality and the incidence of postoperative delirium. To target an adequate depth of anaesthesia, different qualities of anaesthesia need to be determined and the respective monitoring applied. Further, the current literature will be discussed focusing on anaesthesia and awareness, delirium and mortality.
