Abstract

The heavy destruction of the industrial town of Essen during World War II and its subsequent reconstruction took place rather early in the city's architectural development. In combination with strong economic restraints and high population pressure, this lead of the development of buildings colloquially referred to as -grey architecture', posing a great challenge today. The resent analysis shows that these buildings must and can be referred to as a piece of urban heritage.
