Abstract

There are only few case reports to be found on atopic dermatitis in old age. A retrospective study was made on in-patients, older than 65 years, diagnosed as having atopic dermatitis. Cases in which the diagnosis was doubtful were eliminated according to certain strict criteria. Between 1986 and 1990 out of 8580 patients with atopic dermatitis there were 55 patients older than 65 years. 65.5% of them had clinical symptoms since childhood; in 34.5% the disease had manifested for the first time after the age of 30. We conclude that there are different types of atopic dermatitis in old age.
