16 overweight patients (pretreatment weight 90.1 ± 21.8 kg) were treated with an 850 kcal formula diet for two weeks on an outpatient basis. The formula diet met the requirements of the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Ernahrung with respect to protein, vitamins and mineral contents. The concentration of linoleic acid was lower than recommended (0.1 g/24 h) and the linoleic acid concentration of cholesterol esters decreased during two weeks of treatment whereas arachidonic acid decreased. This should, however, not be interpretated as the first signs of a deficiency in essential fatty acids. Weight reduction averaged 4.5 kg within two weeks. Three to five months later 13 of 16 patients had maintained their reduced body weight. Blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglycerides, apolipoproteins B and AI in serum decreased during treatment. HDL-cholesterol had increased in comparison to pretreatment levels when checked three to five months after the end of the weight reduction period.
