Abstract
This dissertation discusses climate change in the Upper Pleistocene and Holocene in an area of difficult access. In the arid phases dunes are formed, in wetter ones, soils. The research took place in the Great Erg of Bilma in Niger-Benin, and the Sahel of Niger and deals with: basic regional geomorphology; methods; soils, the Quaternary geomorphology based on soil examination; and a reconstruction of climate on the basis of the geomorphology and soil studies. He is against too schematic a use of arid and humid phases. Cambic Arenosols developed upon the dunes. Phases can be correlated over large areas. -D.J.Davis
