Abstract
South of Kaouar in the South-Sahara area of East Niger dunes of different ages and grades of weathering are investigated. Three generations of dunes can be distinguished. The oldest generation is weathered very strongly. According to stratigraphical and geomorphic findings formation of these oldest dunes must be attributed to the Ogolian (Kanemian), i.e. a very arid climatic phase which had its summit between 20 000 and 18 000 BP. The humid period of the early Holocene, which in the (South-)Sahara means the time between 12 000 and 8000 years BP, is considered to be the time of weathering. In the Southern Sahara as well as in the Sahelian regions the Ogolian represents a period of strongest sand movement and dune building. Its intensity was never reached by the following arid phases of the Holocene. -from English summary
