Generation and gas-phase reactivity of CoGa+

Abstract

Electron impact ionization and subsequent fragmentation of volatile but stable organometallic precursor compounds is used to release naked CoGa+ ions to transfer into and analyse by a high resolution Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometer. Gas-phase bimolecular reactions of CoGa+ ions with methanol, among others, yield two distinct isomers of (GaCH3OH)+ with significant internal excitation. Ab initio calculations using a density functional approach for CoGa+ and (GaCH3OH)+ complement the experimental findings.
