Abstract

Spruce needles of the needle age classes 1983 and 1984, subjected to various pollutants, were analysed for chlorophyll, ascorbic acid, glutathion and tocopherol contents. Based on the results, which need to be verified in further experiments, it may be concluded that the tocopherol content increases with either ozone or acid mist treatment, and decreases with a combination of both stresses. Glutathion levels decrease after acid mist treatment and increase after ozone treatment. The fluctuations in the levels of ascorbat are within the natural variation which exists between trees. There is no indication for a treatment effect on the chlorophyll content.
