Abstract

As with most process steps for the manufacturing of components made from carbon fiber reinforced plastics, mechanical cutting of multilayered preforms does currently not meet the demands for use in the automotive industry. Notably, the requirements regarding cycle time, edge quality and tool life are not being fulfilled. Gas-assisted laser cutting of carbon fiber preforms is discussed in this paper as an alternative process.
