Abstract
Compares design and production in the engineering industry with that in the textile industries, paying particular attention to the way 'concurrent engineering' can be supported by the use of computers. The authors report an the nature of the design processes in the knitwear industry and how the uneven pattern of work through the year causes severe communication problems between designers and technicians. These problems can be overcome by integrating technical and production considerations using concurrent design processes.
