Abstract

The free induction decay of a spectroscopic band with discrete distribution of transition frequencies is investigated. For systems with constant dephasing time of the individual transitions, exponential asymptotic decay is predicted for the signal envelope, which results from statistical phase correlation within the frequency distribution. Observation of the weak asymptotic signal requires high measuring sensitivity but allows the determination of the dephasing time for such inhomogeneously broadened bands. The effect is demonstrated for vibrational Q-transitions of CH4 and CHF3 in the infrared at medium pressure level studying coherent propagation of ps pulses.
