Abstract
The frequency responses of three electrodynamic as well as three electrostatic earphones including open and closed systems were determined by subjective loudness matching in an anechoic chamber. None of the investigated earphones showed free-field characteristics, independent of frequency; on the contrary earphones representing either the electrodynamic or electrostatic type of transducer produced variations in the frequency response, exceeding plus or minus 5 dB. Differences in absolute thresholds, as measured by an electrodynamic compared with an electrostatic earphone can be accounted for by the different frequency responses, as far as the mean frequencies are concerned. However, in addition at rather low and high frequencies, respectively, the type (open vs closed system) and position of the earphone may play an important part.
