Abstract

Explicit expressions depending on two variational parameters are derived for the free energy and the effective mass of the Fröhlich polaron at finite temperatures. The variation is carried out with Feynman's trial action and an arbitrary external electric force. All path integrals occurring in that connection are evaluated exactly. Asymptotic expressions in the weak and strong coupling case as well as diagrams for the main formulae are given.
