Abstract

The authors investigate the fracture toughness properties of the ductile medium-strength aluminium alloys AlZn4,5Mg1, AlMg4,5Mn and AlMgSi1 weldments using the methods of linear-elastic and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics. Properties are compared for three material zones: unaffected parent metal, heat-affected zone, and weld metal. In some cases there is a marked difference between the fracture toughness values obtained by different methods. Only J-integral analysis gave reliable values showing the satisfactory fracture toughness behaviour of the alloys investigated.
