Abstract

We investigated Foturan® glass ceramic as a promising substrate material for micro-solid oxide fuel cells (μ-SOFC), including processing and electrochemical characterization of free-standing μ-SOFC membranes. The Foturan® wet etching rate was determined to be 16 μm/min. This results in 31 min etching to fabricate a free-standing μ-SOFC membrane. The maximum power output of μ-SOFC membranes was 209 mW/cm2 at 550°C with an open circuit voltage of 0.58 V.
