Abstract
During the second half of the 1980s, analyses and recommendations pretaining to necessary research and development activities led to the preparations of several reports. The present article considers the generation objectives, and the assessment of these reports and comments upon their coverage and research goals. They show only little overlap in the area of chemical engineering since they were written from different standpoints. The report issued by DECHEMA proves to be the most comprehensive in the field of industrial chemistry. Since it considers primarily chemical research it is given only brief consideration here. The article closes with an overview of the disciplines in which research was actually conducted.
