Abstract
A new endurance maximization method is developed. This flight method can be characterized as a dynamic type of endurance flight with optimal cyclic control, the motion of the aircraft showing periodic behavior. An analytical treatment for the maximization problem is developed on the basis of an energy state model for describing aircraft dynamics. It is shown tht the powerplant type has a decisive influence on the improvements possible. The relationships for optimal speed/altitude combinations within the flight envelope are derived. In addition to the analytical treatment of the energy state model, a numerial optimization investigation is performed in which a complete aircraft dynamics model is used.
