Abstract

Flexibility is an increasingly important requirement in automated manufacturing plants. Multi-agent systems (MAS) seem to be a promising approach to achieve this goal. In order to maximize flexibility and fault tolerance, dynamic communication between the software agents is needed. This is challenging when dealing with software agents on real time systems and thus communication within and between real time runtime environments. A concept is proposed to deal with this problem by differentiating between real time and nonreal time communication and a method to set up dynamic real time communication channels in a distributed MAS. An application sample is presented, into which the concept was implemented, and an evaluation is given.
