Abstract

Injuries caused by the passing of hydroelectric turbines pose a major threat for the species of the European eel. Within scientific research at the Technische Universität München facilities for unharmed downstream passage of eels via a bypass and underlying the principle of no force were constructed to grant unhindered migration of the European eel in running onshore waters. In addition to research using downscaled models in combination with results of behavioural examinations of eels}, a test facility was installed at the hydroelectric power station Dettelbach in the river Main to conduct several years of open-range testing from 2005 onwards.
