Finite element investigation of the crack formation in the slag line of a teeming ladle

Abstract

Vertical cracks were observed in the wear lining particularly in the slag zone of MgO-C lined teeming ladles. The distance between the cracks is 5 to 8 times the width of the bricks in circumferential direction. The typical case of cracking can be seen in figure 1. The aim of the analysis is to clarify the mechanisms of crack formation from a thermo-mechanical point of view. Possible failure mechanisms were identified from fundamental considerations. These mechanisms have been analysed using the FEM code DIANA [1]. Three dimensional, axisymmetrical and plane strain models were implemented for both transient thermal simulations and subsequent mechanical simulations. Geometry and boundary conditions were chosen according to a ladle affected by this type of wear.
