Abstract

Due to their high specific strength and stiffness fibre reinforced plastics (FRPs) are not only significant in aviation and aerospace. They have also successfully proven their high innovation potential in different applications of machine tool building. However, they are rarely used in this field. This raises the question of whether FRPs are not a relevant option in machine tools or the right conditions for a broadly based use are simply missing. At least, the identification and evaluation of concrete possible applications point toward a solution. A method to identify potential applications for the use of FRPs in a systematic, quick and effective way is shown here.
