note = "Funding Information: This Special Issue is made up of papers presented at the April 2–4, 2008 “Facing the Future: Joint Aspen FACE, SoyFACE and SFB 607 Meeting” that was held in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, United States. The meeting convened principal investigators from the world's three major “Free-Air” manipulative ozone exposure experiments. The Aspen Free-Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment (FACE) Experiment (Aspen FACE; www.aspenface.mtu.edu ) is a 32-ha facility that operated during 1998–2009. Twelve 30 m dia. FACE rings were used to fumigate trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) genotypes, paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.), and sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) with O 3 and CO 2 applied singly or in combination. Aspen FACE was supported by the US Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research, USDA Forest Service Northern Global Change Program, the USDA Forest Service Central Research Station, Michigan Technological University, the Praxair Foundation, the McIntire-Stennis Program, and the Canadian Forest Service.
