Abstract

The phenomenon of static armoring is viewed as a case of non-equilibrium bedload transport of graded bed material under low Shields stresses. The temporal and spatial development of bed surface coarsening as well as bed degradation is documented by means of an experimental investigation. The experiments were simulated with a one-dimensional model. The numerical results showed a good agreement regarding the final state, which was observed in the experiments. However important discrepancies in the intermediate stages were apparent. The influence of the adopted non-equilibrium approach is discussed.
