Abstract
This paper presents experimental demonstrations of amplitude-modulated radiofrequency pulses for narrowband inversion of uncoupled spins and dipolar-coupled spin pairs in NMR. Experimental results for inversion pulses optimized for uncoupled spins are compared with theoretical predictions. These same pulses however cannot be applied to coupled spins because the spin-spin coupling interferes with the inversion. A new class of amplitude-modulated pulses, suitable for effecting inversions of longitudinal magnetization in strongly coupled spins, is experimentally demonstrated and shown to agree well with theory.
