Abstract

Following the Bad Reichenhall ice-arena collapse, the Chair of Timber Structures and Building Construction conducted two large-scale projects to evaluate existing wide-span timber structures The paper discusses the most frequent failure modes and reasons for observed failures and will give recommendations on how to assess wide-span timber structures as well as on intervals of future evaluations to maintain the intended level of safety.
