Abstract

The use of prostaglandins to induce abortion during the second trimester is discussed. During the period 1974-1977, 21 patients were treated by intrauterine, extraamniotic administration of prostaglandin F2(α), while 48 patients were treated intramuscularly with 15 (S)-15-methylprostaglandin F2(α). Nearly all patients suffered rather severe gastrointestinal side effects, but these responded reasonably to pharmacotherapy; accordingly, the use of prostaglandins, and especially of 15-methylprostaglandin, is considered highly useful for the induction of abortion between the 13th and the 16th week. From the 17th to the 20th week, the authors prefer instillation of hypertonic saline.
