Abstract
In Bavaria, rural development is traditionally based on geodesy. The general change of values in our society, and the re-discovery and political upgrading of rural areas are greatly increasing the relative importance of the most essential sectors of rural development: village renewal and landscape planning. Consequently, also higher qualifications are required with regard to the subject of studies and expert knowledge. Additional qualifications in the fields of economy and ecology are in high demand as well as an intuitive understanding and knowledge of immaterial and, in particular, socio-cultural aspects. At present, Europe goes through radical changes. Despite all difference East and West feel a common desire for regional identity and for the preservation of close-knit communities, characteristic village features and a rural landscape. Thus, village and landscape development are taking on a real European dimension. From the Bavarian point-of-view, the author treats the question, to which degree European neighbours will be able to learn from and to help one another in "regional Europe'. -English summary
