Abstract

FUTURE RULES AND STANDARDS ON FATIGUE design of aluminum and steel structures will include fracture mechanics analysis as a complementary fatigue assessment procedure. The main application regions are the theoretical analysis of defects, the derivation of safe inspection intervalls and the analysis of cracks detected during quality control and inspection. It also provides a means for a quantifiable correlation between quality levels and service loads. Conventional methods for fatigue design can cover these areas only by expensive tests. Systematic research data contributing to a widely applicable solution proposal is not yet available. Here, the results of the AlMgSil (6082) -alloy are discussed. This alloy is used in a wide range of engineering applications, because of the corrosion resistance, the weldability, high strength and toughness. The fatigue crack growth behaviour of the two other alloys is similar with alloy specific differences locally.
